The Engineered Throne by Megan Derr

In general, he's a very level headed person and the best person to turn to when things go wrong. But when it comes to trying to ransom a fake prince, he turns to Perdith for help. I love his ideas and strategies with running the kingdom and warring. He keeps saying he's not as special as people think but he's special enough to marry into royalty.

After deaths from both of their families, they mellowed and really try to work together to defend their kingdom from further attacks and find the culprit.Īll the characters in the book have unique voices and personalities. After Perdith recovers, he initially distrusts Vellem and refuses his help in ruling the kingdom. Vellem has to deal with being an outsider and trying to run a kingdom with basically no help while Perdith is in a coma. The family tensions and distrust between the two kingdoms are well written and very engaging.

I love the awesome world building that's so characteristic of Megan Derr. Now Perdith and Vellem have to figure out how to manage a kingdom, make their marriage work in the long run, and figure out who is responsible for the bombing. Unfortunately, tragedy strikes and all the royal family members died in a bombing except for Perdith.

Vellem, a war hero and an excellent engineer, is marrying Perdith, the youngest prince who has no hope of ever being king due to the long line of older brothers. Two kingdoms, previously at war, are now attempting peace by marrying a prince and a hero together from the two sides. This book is set in a pseudo-historical world with dragons. Review posted on Books on Silver Wings blog. This is not the first book by this author where the characters have arranged marriage, and find respect and love in it - this however is the first book where while I completely believe that the men are suited to each other and I am sure became good friends, I just did not feel much chemistry from them. It is well done, fast paced, makes you glued to the pages, but I am kind of puzzled about romance. I guess the book is technically a fantasy, because the world is fictitious and there are dragons present as pets in one of the countries, but otherwise I would just characterize it as a political thriller with a love story thrown in and be done with it. It made sense of course, because political games, betrayal, terrorism are at the front and center of the plot and I think this is the first book by this author where politics felt so merciless and cold and that is why so real to me. I expected to see the pragmatic characters who rarely wallow in self pity despite dealing with tough circumstances (and if they are at a breaking point for a page or so, you can be assured that there is a very good reason for that), but boy I did not expect to see them being *that* pragmatic. I buy pretty much every novel by this author, so I had to get this one.
