In the book, the character of Cleo Sherwood appears in fewer scenes than does the character of Madeleine Schwartz. It’s unclear whether Nyong’o’s abrupt departure will push that timeline back. In 2014, Nyong’o won an Oscar as best supporting actress for her soulful performance in “12 Years a Slave.”įilming began in Baltimore earlier this month and originally was scheduled to continue through October. Nyong’o, who in 2014 was selected by People magazine as the world’s most beautiful woman, had been cast as Sherwood, who in Lippman’s book is described as physically stunning. The girl’s badly bruised body was found two days later in a wooded area known as a local lover’s lane. Just three months later, 11-year-old Esther Lebowitz (in the novel, she’s named Tessie Fine) was murdered in the basement of a popular local aquarium store. In each of the novels three larger parts, Lippman presents alternating first. Parker was a 35-year-old barmaid at the then-famous Sphinx Club. Laura Lippmans Lady in the Lake is written from a network of narrative vantages. The body of Shirley Lee Wigeon Parker (Cleo Sherwood in the book) was found June 2, 1969, in a fountain at the center of Druid Lake.

“Lady in the Lake” takes place in Baltimore in 1966 and was inspired by two real-life murders. Adichie divides her time between her native Nigeria and a home in Howard County. In 2020, she withdrew from filming an adaptation ofChimamanda Ngozi Adichie’s acclaimed novel, “Americanah” for HBO Max after the COVID-19 pandemic wreaked havoc with the film schedule. And, as much as this is an atmospheric suspense story based on two true-crime cases, it's also a compelling female adventure tale of Maddie, at mid-life, coming into her own amidst a rich historical depiction of 1960s Baltimore. This was the second time in two years that Nyong’o pulled out of a film production with Maryland ties. Chandler's The Lady in the Lake was a middlin' novel but Lippman's is a stunner, one that not only gives voice to that murdered 'lady in the lake,' but to a diverse crowd of Baltimoreans: Narrators include a jewelry store clerk, a beat cop and a player for the Baltimore Orioles. Cleo is the still center around which her living counterpart, a white Jewish woman named Maddie Schwartz, frantically orbits. For me as a reader, what's incontestable is the power that Lippman bestows on Cleo's post-mortem voice and presence. 'Lippman is a natural storyteller at the height of her powers.' Lee Child From the New York Times bestselling author of Sunburn Cleo Sherwood disappeared eight months ago. Lippman has already weighed in in interviews and articles about her controversial decision as a white writer to adopt the voice of a black woman as one of her main characters. And that's not Lippman's only act of appropriation.

Laura Lippman's new suspense novel is called Lady in the Lake, a pretty straightforward purloining of the title of Raymond Chandler's fourth Philip Marlowe novel.
